Why Soy Wax?

The smell of your candle should not be the only factor you consider when choosing a fragrance to burn in your home.

Besides soy wax, there are many wax sources such as paraffin, palm and coconut to name a few.  Each of these waxes have unique chemical properties that affect their performance and emit chemicals into the air you breathe.  Willow and Toad only uses 100% soy wax.  That is what sets Willow and Toad apart from the rest.

Soy Wax vs. Paraffin Wax

Soy wax is derived from soybeans.  Soybeans are a major crop grown, harvested, and processed in the United States; 2nd only to corn.  Once the beans have been harvested, they are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled and rolled into flakes.  Soybean oil is extracted from the flakes and the leftover flakes are used for animal feed. Soy wax is available in flakes and pellets.

Paraffin wax in contrast is one of the most popular candle waxes due to its cheap costs. Paraffin wax is the by-product of the petroleum, coal or oil purification process. Once the waxy substance is removed from the crude oil you are left with paraffin wax.  Does that seem like a natural way to accent your home with fragrance?

Soy Wax Benefits

Soy wax is a renewable resource, not only is there a “green” advantage, but the wax also burns slower and your candle lasts longer.  While all candles will emit some black soot while burning, candles made from soy wax burn cleaner and result in less soot. Another reason to choose soy wax when it comes to candles is the fact that soy wax is an excellent fragrance carrier that does not require chemical amplifiers.  The result is a well-balanced true to scent candle that you will enjoy.

Burn Time

Burn times will always vary depending on the placement of your candle. Drafty areas will burn slightly quicker. Burn times will also vary depending on the height of your wick. The longer the wick, the quicker the candle will burn. You can extend your candles burn time by burning the candles long enough to allow the wax pool to reach the edge. If you do not allow them to burn all the way to the edge of the container when you first burn them, they will begin to tunnel down into the wax instead of melting all the way to the edges.
